Do you like to knit or crochet? We would love to have you join us in the newly formed Prayer Shawl Ministry. We prayerfully make shawls which are blessed by Fr. Peter. The shawls are then taken to persons in need of comfort—perhaps someone facing a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one, or a difficult decision in life. The enveloping warmth and the knowledge that someone took the time to handcraft the shawl specifically for the person in need is very powerful, both in a spiritual and physical sense. For the person making the shawl, the reward is the knowledge that your craft is comforting and prayerfully supportive of our church family.
Georgie Olson (949.551.6710) will receive the completed shawls, and enclose a card containing a prayer and a brief description of the purpose of the shawl. She will then pass them on to Fr. Peter as the need arises. Georgie and Sally Menzel (949.725.0715) have patterns for both crocheted and knitted shawls.
The patterns use Homespun yarn (available at Tall Mouse and Michael’s), take about 3 skeins each, and use large needles/hooks, so the work goes quickly. There is also a good prayer-shawl pattern on the Internet at www.lionbrand.com.
Sally is willing to teach anyone who would like to learn to knit. The shawls are a good beginner project, as the stitches are simple to learn. You can make a shawl on your own, or we would be willing to form a group to meet and work together once a week or once a month. Let us know!
