THE VICAR’S VOICE

Summer, when life’s rhythm changes

I know that it is not official, but I think it is safe to say that summer has begun. The sun is out longer, baseball is in full swing, and vacations are being planned. The biggest indicator for me that summer has begun is that the Browning family is beginning the countdown to the last day of school. These are what I call the dog days—those last few days that just seem to take forever. It takes every ounce of energy for children to finish their homework, parents are burned out making lunches that are never really eaten, and teachers—well, they just need a break! Summer is upon us, which means, hopefully, that everyone will get some time off from that which we need a break from. Sometimes

Mark Sunday, June 12 on your calendar for a Saint Andrew’s Beach Party! We’ll meet at 2:30 p.m. in the church making lot to carpool to the beach at Corona del Mar (the party starts at 3). Sandwiches and drinks will be provided; bring a beach chair, umbrella, and a side dish to share. We’ll have beach games and prizes, and lots of fun!

Things We Will Need: We’re going to need a few large coolers, some easy-to-set-up shades, and someone to pick up the sandwiches and take them to the beach. Contact Peter if you’re able to help out early on the 12th.

Potluck, game night, planning for Social Group meet on the 25th

The Saint Andrew’s Social Group will host a potluck dinner and Game Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, in the North Room at church. Bring food to share with everyone, and your favorite board game (Scrabble, anyone?) or cards to play. All are welcome to attend!

REPAIRS & REPARATIONS

Playground taking shape; next Work Day set for June 11

The Children’s Center playground-construction project is going well. We will see the temporary playground in the middle of the parking lot taken down very shortly, and the children will be relocated back to their newly rebuilt playground. This project, along with the kitchen renovation, will continue

JUNE OUTREACH

Buy books for blossoming Children’s Center bookworms

Our outreach for June will continue to be for the Children’s Center. We will be collecting book donations for children age 6 month to 5 years old. Board books, softcover and hardcover are acceptable. Please avoid any character-based books (i.e., Sponge Bob, movie characters). For those of you who haven’t purchased children’s books in a while, we have provided some options on the outreach board in the narthex. There are Scholastic Books order forms in the narthex and some tags with suggestions for books to purchase. This is a good opportunity for children to get involved. Have them select one of their favorite books to donate.

NEXT MEETING ON JUNE 6

Baby blankets added to prayer shawl group’s œuvre

All knitters and crocheters are invited to attend the next meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry on Monday, June 6th from 7 to 9 p.m. We will meet on the second floor of the Education Building. Bring your current project to work on. Beginning knitters are welcome. (If you need to know what needles and yarn to buy, call Georgie Olson at 949. 551.6710, or Sally Menzel at 949.725.0715.) We have patterns for both knitting and crocheting.

The organ, renewed

Gone are the days of lost stops; 38 circuit boards replaced, updated

Our Allen digital organ is back after a factory refurbishing, sounding better than new—thanks to the many donors to the Organ Fund.

Appreciation Sunday set for June 19

Appreciation Sunday will be held on June 19th this year. This is the Sunday when we set aside some time to honor all those who volunteer their time throughout the year to help keep things running here at Saint Andrew’s—the Sunday School teachers, the Altar Guild, the LEMs, the choir, the lectors, and many other groups too numerous to mention. Let’s all give thanks to them on the 19th!
