The Vicar's Voice | Peter Browning | Stepping up to the plate during vacation

In a few weeks I will be going on vacation and I am very excited to tell you that we have some wonderful priests who will serving Saint Andrew’s on the Sundays that I will be gone. Since we are in the midst of the baseball season, let me give you the lineup. Leading off the first Sunday will be the Rev. Reginald Payne-Wiens, an assistant from St. Margaret of Scotland in San Juan Capistrano, followed by the Rev. Keith Yamamoto, who is also an assistant at St. Margaret’s. Then the last two weeks, batting cleanup, will be our own Colin Henderson. The joke among clergy is that whenever you go on vacations, you should always get someone who is—let’s say—less exciting than yourself. (Now I may be getting myself in trouble!) I really enjoy these three people, and I think you will also.

Our summer vacation is not what I would call extravagant, but it will be restful and enjoyable. Once again we will be making our way to Oregon, where we will be spending time with family. The first stop will be at Melissa’s father’s house. He and his wife, Melissa’s stepmother, live in Roseburg, and lucky for us their backyard is the Umpqua River. The next stop will be to my parent’s house in Hood River where my entire family will gather for two weeks. Keep us in your prayers, because there will be lots of driving.

In the past few months, much has be done here at Saint Andrew’s that we should be thrilled about. We have a brand new kitchen, a new parking lot, and a new playground. While much has been done physically to our plant, there is still much more that needs to be done. As good stewards, we need to continue to improve our worship space. I will share more with you, in the months to come, about some of my dreams.

I was also thrilled about our beach party on June 12th, and I know that everyone who was able to attend had an enjoyable time. The volleyball game was great fun, the food was delicious, but the best part was being able to spend time together. I cannot tell you how important I think that is. Another thrilling event was the Youth Group gathering that took place a couple of weeks ago. We had a super time, and I am excited by what Jill Tamminen is going to do with our youth. As a parent of a Youth Group member, I hope we will all be supportive of her in her ministry.
I hope and pray that all of you will have a fun and relaxed summer.
