THE VICAR’S VOICE

Stewardship: Be prayerful about it

C.S. Lewis once said, “I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditures exclude them.”

‘Mi Amore’ fundraiser a festive success!

Under twinkling stars and with perfect evening weather, Saint Andrew’s members enjoyed a special night out on Oct. 14, 2005. At “Mi Amore, Saint Andrew’s,” fellowship and fundraising took precedence while guests nibbled on delicious appetizers and mingled among the creative and eye-catching silent auction baskets. The courtyard outside Antonello Ristorante was the perfect setting to start off an unforgettable evening.

REPAIRS & REPARATIONS | RUSS HEDMAN

Yellow stripes, trimmed trees all part of Work Day

It turned out to be a nice day at the Work Day in October. Several people turned out to spruce up the church grounds. Many tasks were completed, such as painting yellow stripes in the parking lot, clearing the drains in time for winter, trimming the trees, and performing some landscape work. A hearty thank you to all of those that came out and spent their Saturday morning working at the church. The next Work Day will be announced soon.

Look at those candles!

October was the month for significant birthdays. On Oct. 16, Margaret Taboada (at right) turned 90, and the next Sunday, Henry Seeger turned 95. Cakes were served at coffee hour festivities on both Sundays.

Farewell to Sandra, Kate, Estelle, Chloe, and Helen

On Sunday, Oct. 23, we baptized Helen Flanagan, daughter of Kate Flanagan (the daughter of Sandra Taylor (pictured at right). Sandra, Kate, and her family are leaving us to move to Chicago. We have been blessed by their time here at Saint Andrew’s, and wish them Godspeed on their journey.

CELEBRATE!

Saint Andrew’s Day, our patronal feast, is Nov. 13

Each November, Saint Andrew’s marks its patronal feast of Saint Andrew’s Day with a festive Eucharist and celebration. Please join us on Nov. 13 as we celebrate not only the life and ministry of our patron saint, but all that Saint Andrew’s has meant to us through the years.

Bishop to visit on Nov. 20; only one service that day

The Rt. Rev. Robert Anderson, Assisting Bishop of the diocese, will be here at Saint Andrew’s on Nov. 20 for the regularly scheduled visitation by a bishop. While Bp. Anderson is here, he will preach and celebrate, and also administer confirmation, as well as performing receptions and reaffirmations.

THANKSGIVING

Giving our thanks to God

Join us on Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. for a Thanksgiving Eve Eucharist, as we give thanks for all that God has given us. At this Eucharist, we will remember our many blessings, be grateful for one another, and praise the one who has blessed us. The Thanksgiving Eucharist is a wonderful reminder that all the gifts we receive every day are spiritual as well as material.

Help Families Forward rebuild their food bank

Our outreach effort for November is to assist Families Forward here in Irvine in building up their food bank, which has been depleted because of donations going to hurricane relief. (As a matter of fact, they have now adopted some Katrina refugees.) Therefore, we are asking for contributions of canned fruit—that’s their number-one need—as well as soup, peanut butter and jelly (or jam), rice and pasta, canned vegetables, and canned beans. Please limit your donations to only the above items. We’ll have a barrel set up in narthex—our goal is to fill more than one barrel.
