THE VICAR’S VOICE

God, as seen on the lake while fishing

If I have not told you yet, one of the things I love to do is fly-fish. There is nothing better than watching the fish come up and take your fly, and if you’re able to hook the fish, the fun is just beginning. At that point it becomes a test of wills, as the fish uses all of its tricks to try and dislodge the hook from the lip of its mouth. You can actually feel the fish shaking his mouth, through the rod, as he attempts to free himself. Before I go further, let me say that I am strictly a catch-and-release fisherman, and the beauty of fly-fishing is that by catching the fish on the lip, you do not hurt the fish.

IN ORDER TO BEAUTIFY THE WORSHIP SPACE...

‘La nostra bella chiesa’

That’s Italian for what we want our church to look like: beautiful. Help it become that way by coming to our annual fundraiser on Sept. 23.

Saint Andrew’s annual fundraiser gala is just around the corner. “La Nostra Bella Chiesa” [“ Our Beautiful Church”] will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Antonello Ristorante, near South Coast Plaza, starting at 6 p.m. As it stands right now, we are very close to a ticket sell-out for this event. And don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets (at church services) for a chance to win three grand prizes!
Come and enjoy a grand evening to help support “Our Beautiful Church”! Please contact Debbie Foret at 949.854.1341 or debbieforet@hotmail.com if you have any last-minute services or gift baskets to donate for the silent auction.

Picnic in the park

After church on Oct. 15th, enjoy an afternoon of fun, food, and games.

Enjoy the milder weather of October at our Fall Picnic in the Park, which will be held at William Mason Regional Park, located at Culver and University Dr., on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 15. We have reserved a covered picnic site overlooking the lake (Site #2).

AT BOTH SERVICES

Blessing of the Animals takes place on Oct. 8

We will celebrate Saint Francis’ Day on Sunday, Oct. 8. As he is the patron saint of animals, we will offer blessings to all creatures whether they walk on all fours, or fly, swim or slither. If your animal companion is shy, you can bring a photo. Even stuffed pets are welcome. Blessings will be offered at both services.

VOLUNTEERING

Give the Sunday School teachers a hand

Applaud our wonderful teachers, yes, but also give of your time and talent to support our youngsters’ Christian education, too.

We are looking for Sunday School volunteers! It doesn’t require experience, just some love. We have a training program and a simple curriculum to follow. We are also looking for substitutes, class helpers and a coordinator/administrator to help with registration, attendance, scheduling, mailings and any other creative ways to keep the kids interested in attending. Please contact Sarah Campell at sarah247@cox.net or 949.856.4392 if you are interested.

Carry a tune? (Fog a mirror?) Choir needs you!

As Minister of Music Paul Sammon has long reminded us, if you can fog a mirror, you have met the minimum requirements for joining the choir! Our terrific tunesters have started their Thursday evening rehearsals at 7:30 p.m. (and Sundays at 9 a.m.), and invite all those interested to join them. No experience necessary—just be willing to sing!

Work off those calories!

Men’s Group meets at Ruby’s on the 30th, then schleps sand to playground

The next Men’s Group meeting will be held at Ruby’s on Barranca at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The event is breakfast (for that time period, it seems appropriate), and the topic is “whatever we want to talk about.” If enough of us are interested, after breakfast we will go back to the church and transport sand from the parking lot to sandboxes in the Children’s Center; a great way to work off the extra calories we may (or may not) have just consumed. If you plan to attend the breakfast and would be willing to help with this project, please let Peter (peter@standrewsirvine.org) or me (cewright@uci.edu) know.

VIEWPOINT

Open-Hearted, Open-Minded Christianity

By the Rt. Rev. J. JON BRUNO and the Rev. BRYAN JONES

In recent years the Episcopal Church has acted from a firm foundation of biblical, historic faith, not on “whatever the liberal elements of secular society deem permissible or politically correct” as contended by Charlotte Allen in her diatribe against the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches, “Liberal Christianity is paying for its sins” (Los Angeles Times, Sunday, July 9, 2006).
