Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Scrip [but were afraid to go up to the Welcome Kiosk and ask on Sunday mornings] (6069 bytes)

By JEAN SPENCER, Office Manager

t-cap.gif (230 bytes)here have been lots of questions asked about the scrip program at Saint Andrew’s. Here are some answers to allay some fears that people may have about the hows, whys and wherefores!

Q. Is scrip used for the general operating fund?

A. No, very de˜nitely not; scrip is in an entirely separate bank account. This was opened when we joined National Scrip and it allows our account to be electronically debited.

Q. Has it been used in the past for general operating costs?

A. Yes it was one year, without reference to people organizing it, this was the reason a separate account was opened, so this could not happen again.

Q. What has been done with scrip in the past?

A. Saint Andrew’s Church used to have its altar "in the round." It was decided to make the church more "user friendly" by changing it to a more traditional look. So many congregants worked long hours, plus the labor of outside contractors, and the church was changed at a cost of approximately $15,000. This money was provide by the sale of scrip.

Q. Why don’t we have a speci˜c plan now?

A. At the Bishop’s Committee retreat this year it was decided that we needed a 90-day period to see what our needs were and to see how much income scrip would generate.

Q. What could it be spent on?

A. We need a new roof, the North Room needs a new flooring that is easy to keep clean, our bathrooms need renovating, and it could also be used for outreach.

Q. What does it cost me to participate?

Nothing, just the time it takes to write out your order?

Q. Do I pay in advance?

A. Yes, and the scrip will be delivered the following Sunday.

Q. Suppose I’m not there the following week?

A. You may collect it from the of˜ce, or we will look after it until you can pick it up.

Q. How does it work, and is it like real money?

A. You purchase at the face value and the church buys it at a discount, between 2% and 20%, depending on which stores you shop at. The stores treat it as cash and will give you change accordingly.

Q. When is it on sale?

A. At the middle and the end of the month.

Q. Can I still buy it if no one is selling it at the Welcome Kiosk?

A. Yes, you can complete an order form, place it in an envelope with your check made to Saint Andrew’s Scrip and place it in the memorial box in the Narthex.

Q. Is there a minimum or maximum amount I can purchase?

A. No, whatever is good for you.

Scrip is a wonderful way to raise additional funds for those special projects, I hope this has addressed some or all of the concerns. If anyone has any ideas on future expenditures or concerns about mishandling, or would just like to help, please do not hesitate to contact Jean Spencer at 949.559.4699, ext. 19.
