NEWS & NOTES
2 Saints to Their Creator Returned

Saint Andrew’s had two of our saints return to their Creator during May: Margaret Hennes, mother of Pati Rodrigues, died on May 6 following emergency colon surgery and Tom Olson, husband of Georgie and father of Tom, Jr. and Jon, died following heart failure on May 21. Both were buried at Fairhaven Memorial in Santa Ana. Please keep these families in your prayers.

Pati is looking into the Parish Nurse program which helps coordinate and start health ministries in the church. The Rodrigueses offer a hospital bed and special air mattress to anyone who can use them, provided they are passed along in the some way when no longer needed.

Jim Anderson turned 60 and sang at Carnegie Hall with the IVC Chorus all on the same weekend! He has just accepted a new weekday job in Pacoima, but will still be available for choir rehearsals and Sunday "organizing."

The photo display in the Worship Space is the work of Margaret Woodson Nea, mother of Courtney Jones. Margie works gratis for World Neighbors, who offer help for the rural poor in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Congratulations to the following who were baptized on April 3 at the Great Vigil of Easter: Hideko Harris, Michael Bellas and Erica Johnson. Erica’s grandmother, Anette Johnson, is interested in starting a support group for families dealing with mental illness and she has made a donation to the Garden Guild in memory of son Brent.

Confirmed on May 8 were: Daniel Tomchek, Mimi Chubb, Dezré Marsh and Matthew D’Zmura.

Returning to us, after two years at St. George’s in La Cañada, are the Crowders—Jessica, Allison, Charles and the Rev. Linda. They have purchased a home in Woodbridge and rejoin Saint Andrew’s in early July. Linda is already plugged into the clergy rota and a gala House Blessing is being considered for July 24.

Royal Roofing will be putting a new roof on the Worship Space in early June—at no cost to the congregation—compliments of our granting another BTF unit to Pacific Bell.

Alpha is ended, but strong, positive evaluations encouraged a team of Vicki & Phil Schwartz, Roberta Wood and Teri Poythress to dialogue with others re the possibility of doing another round late in ’99 or early in 2000.

Leland was recently elected (again) to the UCI Canterbury board which is working to find an Episcopal chaplain for the coming school year. Susan D’Zmura and Dan Menzel are also members.

Donna Catalano was selected Teacher of the Year for her school in Irvine and among those honored at a dinner on May 6.

Sarah Spencer recently got her California driver’s license and older sis, Rachel, graduated from IVC.

Neil Kuczynski is graduating from UC San Diego on June 13, BA in Philosophy.

Gavin Stuttard just received word that he passed the California Bar exam (does this make three: the province of Ontario, and the states of New York and California?) and he and spouse, Candice Crocker are the pleased new owners of a home in Woodbridge.

Mileva Saulo has encouraging news from the first part of her tenure review at USC, including a reduction of her teaching and administrative load for the next semesters.

We are looking for several new volunteers to serve either as a new team or as subs for our current tellers. Money changing (actually counting and posting) is done on Mondays at 7:30 a.m. (for about two hours), but a new team could arrange any time from Sunday afternoon to Monday at 2 p.m. Let head teller Trish Hayden (949.552.5291) or Leland know if you are interested or need more info.

Pilgrim Church, our current Korean congregation, will be leaving us at the end of June. They have shared our facility for nearly two years.

Greg Skaggs, new attender and president of G. K. Skaggs Importers (of mainly Salvadoran beer) has been chosen to brew and distribute Romulan Brew, the world’s first blue beer! Trekkies rejoice! (What, no Romulan ale? —Ed.)

It’s not beer, but coffee hour is still going well, and needs a few more folk to step forward to brew it up, serve it up, and clean it up on Sunday mornings. Sign-up sheets are at the Welcome Kiosk.
