September 2003Homecoming on Holy Cross There’s no place like homeand no time like Sunday, Sept. 14, for our annual Homecoming Sunday. While we can’t promise a homecoming queen or a football scrimmage with a cross-town rival, we will be kicking off this year’s fall programs and stewardship campaign on that day, as well as registering the junior varsity for Sunday school. As it happens, Sept. 14 is also the Feast of the Holy Cross. Our own feast will be a barbecue following the 10 o’clock service, so be sure to bring a meat or vegetarian item for the grill plus a side dish to share. And since this is also the last gasp of summer, dessert will be homemade ice cream. Do think of contributing any of the following if you can: an ice cream freezer, an ice chest, a favorite topping (syrup, fresh or canned fruit, whipped cream), or simply a recipe that works for you. At the center of the service, meanwhile, will be the blessing of our new altar frontal. Given by Betty Clements and the work of English textile artist Juliet Hemingray, this unique creation was designed both to harmonize with existing church hangings and to reflect the luminous imagery of living water that follows the apostle Andrew through the Gospels. Metallic fish swim through a many-colored sea of silk; their air bubbles are tiny jewels, while a cross surmounts the whole. In short, Sept. 14 matters at Saint Andrew’s. Please mark your calendar for a day of special beauty and new beginnings! |
