September 2003SUNDAY SCHOOL SCOOP Now that fall is upon us, all creatures great and especially small will want to know about the new Sunday School year, which begins officially on Sept. 21. The routine will be a bit different from years past. Here’s how. Even if you don’t have little ones, you may have noticed that over the summer, we tried out a new program that brings children of all ages together in a single Liturgy of the Word designed just for them. In the end, the Children’s Chapel proved so popular that it seemed a shame not to let it continue through the fall. So each Sunday, those 12 and under will start the day in Mass, then depart en masse for the classroom, where they will enjoy their own program built around an age-appropriate version of the day’s Gospel reading. Interactive story and sermon time will follow, along with music and prayer. After a craft or creative activity, all will rejoin mom and/or dad in church for Communion. Though this program is for children, it takes committed grown-ups to make it happen. Happily, two regular teachers have generously volunteered to alternate Sundays, but at least one co-leader per week is still needed. So if you are an adult who likes children or a teenager looking for an excuse to skip the sermon, please sign up for one or two Sundays this fall. A good time to do so is during Sunday school registration on September 14. Musical skills of any kindfrom kazoo-noodling on upare especially desirable. But willing hearts are all that’s really needed to support this vital and fulfilling ministry. |
